PART III - Building The Future

Despite the long hard hours, one of Greg's primary reasons for staying in dairy farming was the closeness to family it offered him. He definitely enjoys working with his son. Jill is also heavily involved in the family business, working almost daily at the Ice Cream Shoppe in Wooster. However, neither realized how difficult it would be to launch the dairy/Ice Cream Shoppe.

"That was a lot of work," Greg smiles. "We spent the entire winter of 1996 basically working two jobs. "We would go over to the property after milking in the morning and work on the land and building. When we got the structure up, we would go over after the afternoon milking and often work until midnight."

This was no small feat considering that Greg's typical day starts before 5 a.m. and usually doesn't end before 7 p.m. However, he and the rest of the family all agree that it was worth it as the Hartzler milk steadily makes its way to dining tables throughout Ohio.
